The Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) is one of the most renowned museums for modern and contemporary art worldwide. Together with the Museum Leopold and the Kunsthalle Wien, the MUMOK building, a bold cube covered with gray basalt, is one of the main attractions of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, located in the baroque setting of Fischer von Erlach’s former imerial stables. Within this new center for art and culture, where artistic developments can be traced from modernity to many contemporary forms of expression, the MUMOK acts as a focal point, as it were, featuring artworks both past and present to put them on display – and make them engage in an on-going dialog – under one roof.
At three levels the museum displays its collection in an annual cycle of presentations under the titel FOKUS shedding light on aesthetic linkages and inherent similarities in a flexible and highly intriguing format.
There is also a floor, as well as a separate exhibition space called Factory, including a temporary cinema, reserved for special shows and contemporary art discourse. As visitors are confronted with contemporary art, their view of the past is changed – and this turns the museum into a real work in progress.
