MARGRIET SMULDERS ( 1955, BUSSUM ) lives and work in Nijmegen

Inspired by the floral paintings of the 17th century, Margriet Smulders started to ‘paint’ photographic floral still-lives during the year 2000. The usage of a mirror enabled her to create a rich, generous and highly scented image. The effect is like looking into a clear pond, where rivulets of pure water descend from glacial protrusions. But not all the flowers are in pristine condition, suggesting that something frightening might happen. The presence of insects, frogs and drops of blood make the flower still-lives even more sinister. Balancing between frivolous surfaces and mysterious depths, the images are representative for Margriet’s own life. But nothing is so strong as gentleness, as she once remarked.

In her most recent floral still-lives ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?´Margriet analyses in a Shakespearean way the possibility to pass on something eternal. The beauty of a summer’s day is always fleeting, but it turns in something eternal when shared. The titles of the floral still-lives are derived from Shakespeare’s famous sonnet. The references to Van Gogh’s sunflowers and night paintings are remarkable. As an artist in residence at the Van Gogh house in Zundert his work became an eternal source of inspiration.
